OCEANOGRAPHY (marine science) ; Simple But Very Good





INTRODUCTION
            Oceanography is the study of science and mathematics to study and explain the complex interactions between seawater, the atmosphere and the biosphere.
They aim to understand and predict how the oceans works, as well as working out how to make the most efficient and sustainable use of its resources. Those who take career in Oceanography are called OCEANOGRAPHERS. Areas of specialization in Oceanography include Aquaculture, Biological Oceanography, Biotechnology, Fisheries resources, Marine, Geology/Geophysics, Physics and Chemical Oceanography.
Being an Oceanographer can involve in the career aspect areas like minerals exploitation, Shipping, Pollution, Weather prediction, Climate change and renewable energy.
 
            CAREER PROSPECTS
1. MINISTRY OF ENVIRONMENT: - Graduates of Oceanography are employed in the ministry of environment to work as pollution officers, to handle pollution effects on the environment, they manage the  control  and maintenance of waste products to avoid pollution.

2. MINISTRY OF AGRICULTURE AND NATURAL RESOURCES: - Oceanographers can be employed in the ministry of Agriculture because of their deep knowledge of Aquaculture and fisheries resources. They work hand in hand with other professionals in the ministry to achieve sufficiency in fish production.


3. REASERCH AND TRANING INSTITUTES: - like Animal production, Fisheries and Oceanography research institute in Nigeria and similar institute in other Countries, requires the service of graduates of Oceanography for effective research findings. Another organization in Nigeria is Institute for Oceanography and Marine Reassert, International Institute of tropical Agriculture.

4. MINING INDUSTRY: - Specialized industry in search of raw-materials will definitely need the service of   Oceanographers, who deeply understand mineral exploitation and energy sources for their effective operations.

5. GOVERNMENT CORPORATION AND AGENCIES: - such as NNPC, NAFDAC, Nigeria Institute of Oceanography and Marine Research (NIFOR), Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) Federal Environment protection Agency (FEPA), National Biosafety Management Agency (NBMA), Nigeria Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Raw-materials and development Council (RMRDC), National Water Resources Institute ( NWRI), National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), are some of the  organizations in Nigeria that can employ graduates in Oceanography, such similar organizations  in other Countries can as well employ oceanography graduates.

6. TEACHING AND RESERCH IN COLLEGE AND UNIVERSITY: - Graduates of Oceanography  can be employed in University and Colleges to teach various courses that can lead a person to Career in Oceanography.

NOTE: - The programme is offered in the faculty of Science. It can last for period of 4 or 5 years in the university of Agriculture and University of technology. Degree  of B.sc (Hons) or B.Tech (Hons) is awarded.


COURSE REQUIREMENT: - to be an applicant in the course require you possess five '5' credit passes in any of English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Pass or credit in Geography is an added advantage
